Wanzie's Monorail Inferno at Fringe


Wanzie's Monorail Inferno opened with a fabulous opening number. The theater was dark, and the actors on stage held flashlights that created a menacing effect. I was excited, it looked like we were in for an amazing ride. Unfortunately that high energy suddenly died when the first act got under way.

A bored transgender Disney hostess guided wide eyed tourists around the stage. On the monorail any impending doom was masked by the mundane. The monorail got stuck on it's tracks leading to a forced purgatory for everyone on board and the audience. A teen wore a red bow worthy of Minnie Mouse and her boyfriend just seemed to be along for the ride. a thin rail of a woman was a choreographer who was stuck doing choreography for theme park shows. A southern bell sat next to a southern hick. A small girl got into a screaming fit and was bound and gagged by the passengers. Each person on the monorail seemed like a caricature, rather than someone with a personal history worth learning.

The southern hick had issues with the Disney Hostess but thankfully they were separated by the line of seated passengers. There was some resolution as they both told aspects of their past that showed that they both suffered and suffering is a game that needn't be won. After a long wait, passengers were finally allowed to disembark and the hick was the first to leave. He left behind a package which I thought was a staging mistake, but it was the cause of the inferno to follow. The show is a musical but several numbers could clearly be cut without slowing down the plot. The worst is when a passenger breaks into song for no apparent reason. The final number had the entire cast dressed in white singing and dancing in heaven, finally finding the happiness they never found in life. I suppose the story was intended as a morality tale but I was confused.

Jack Kerouac: End of the Road at the Fringe


Southern Winds Theatre, from Orlando, Florida presented Jack Kerouac: End of the Road at the Orlando International Fringe Festival. In July of 1969, three months before he died, Jack Kerouac, the father of the "beat movement," appeared on William F. Buckley’s "Firing Line." In a tirade of booze inspired talk, he shared stories about his insane, yet creatively inspired travels on the road.

The play is staged in the waiting room before Jack goes on the air. There he drinks and reminisces about his life, family and friends. He is labeled as a "Beat" which is similar to many with "Hippies" as they became known in the 1960s. His views however are rather conservative and Republican. He himself viewed hippies as degenerates. As he sips alcohol his speech slurs and hiss views become blunt.

I have done many sketches of resident authors who write at the Kerouac House here in Orlando. The Dharma Bums was written right here in a tiny Orlando house which Jack shared with his mom. When On The Road became a best seller, Jack needed to borrow bus money to go up to NYC to talk to his publisher.With such strong Orlando connections, how could I not want to learn more about his life?

He only wanted to go on the TV program to recite some of his poems, but Buckley wanted instead to get his views about the Beats. In the rare moments Kerouac does wax poetic, a sax player appears out of nowhere to perform an accompaniment to his angst. It would be nice if the history of his life flowed as if in a Benzedrine induced haze, but the writing seemed forced as if for a historic made for TV movie. Perhaps I was just put off by having to see a young vibrant man wasting away needlessly on stage. Jack died an alcoholic. We will never know what was left unwritten.

In Tandem at Fringe


What would you give for an escape, freedom, or for complete liberty? In Tandem is inspired by the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. The Explore Composite from Orlando Florida examines the complexities of humanity and how we came to develop the relationships we have today. What bonds us? What drives us apart? How far would we go to protect the ones we love?

These ideas were explored through modern dance. In he beginning of the show, as the audience filtered into the theater. A sheet of paper was scrolled open on the floor and dancers would lie down and have their outline traced on the sheet. Each dancer in turn had their outline added to the sheet and at the end of the show the sheet was taken out and taped to the back wall of the theater. The markers unfortunately weren’t very wide, so I couldn’t see the lines added to the sheet.

 For me it was a challenging hour of trying to catch changing gestures in the ever changing flow of dance. Being a small theater, the dancers had to work in a tight area. I like that the dance company has dancers off all shapes and sizes. It wasn’t just a company of very thin dancers, which makes it more believable to present concepts that explore big concepts that affect us all. Not everything rang true for me. But as an artist, I always appreciate a chance to sketch dance.

Ruminations at Fringe


Presented by the BAAD Project, Ruminations, like the name suggests, is inspired by the ruminations of Alan Wilson Watts. When was the last time you really took the time to stop? Stop thinking, stop doing, just listen. So often we are caught up in the whirlwind of life, always moving from one thing to the next we rarely take the time to settle in, quiet our mind, and observe. Utilizing explosive movement and captivating partnering, we delve into our relationships with each other and with nature; we explore what it means to really be present.

Alan Wilson Watts was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Interpreting this philosophy in dance offered some fluid modern dance. Dancers reached for the intangible as the philosopher expressed his views of the world. I cant claim to understand all of what was expressed but that might be the point.

I was pleased to see dancer Jesse Sander who has performed as Yellow at DRIP for years. DRIP just recently had its final performance after 10 years. So it was good to see the talent fostered there still influencing the arts scene here in Orlando. Orlando has a strong dance community and it always shines at Fringe.

Sh*t: An Unauthorized Musical Parody of It at Fringe


Sh*t hits the fan when a shape-shifting evil disguised as a maniacal dancing clown feeds on the youth of Dairy, Maine. When a group of kids discover its true identity, they must destroy it, before it devours them all. From the creators and creative team of last year’s award-winning musical “ThanksKilling The Musical,” this promises to be just as absurd and equally tasteless.

 The play added back in an orgy among the kids that was left out of the movies made from Stephen King's book "It." The results were hilarious as the young boys reach climax and squirt silly string into the audience in an endless stream. A prime directive of the show is that it stretches and alters the reality set up by the author. Carrie kept making cameo appearances although she is from another of Stephen King's books. She looked magnificent in her crown and bloody dress. Gushing oozing splashing blood is a subtle metaphor for a woman coming of age.

Irreverent and often unexpected the songs added a comical bent to the show. The clown Pennywise had a large penis painted red on his white washed face. The show was a fun romp with singing dancing and plenty of silly string.

Pianos to the Death Game Show at Fringe


Pianos to the Death Game Show is the deadliest, rocking game show, where three musicians play their way to survival, and the best part - the judges are you, the live studio audience! Join our Host and his sexy assistants on stage, as you help choose the music, get in on the action, and even pick a demise or two! All in this blood pumping spectator game, where you decide who drops the beat, or just drops dead. Isn't it time for you to be in control?

Producer, Sarah Hester Ross, from Orlando, FL was one of the contestants. She had fiery red hair, an amazing voice and some real talent behind the keyboard. When we entered the black box theater, two fit trim and silver clad performers worked the crowd up into a frenzy. Since we were a studio audience, we had to bring the energy up like in professional wrestling. There were two pianists competing and a drummer, who acted as judge. I didn't fully understand the rules. Contestants kept changing seats, so I never did sketch the male drummer. 

The competition was  fierce and the energy high. Midway through the competition two people were pulled from the audience to dance suggestively. Bikini Katie was  one of the people pulled from the audience and she shocked us all with her stellar twerking abilities. Two guys were pulled from the audience to dance suggestively in front of a woman and their performances were lackluster in comparison. Regardless the results were hilarious and fun to watch.

The ending of the show in which performers were electrocuted for loosing was hard to swallow. Perhaps it is too soon after Pulse, but the thought of finding gratuitous violence funny or entertaining left me uncomfortable. Pam suggested that a pie in the face would be more satisfying. Despite this, the show was highly entertaining and there was some real powerhouse talent showcased. I give the show 4 out of 5 pianos.

Van Gogh Find Yourself at the Orlando Fringe Festival


Van Gogh Find Yourself can be found in the Gold Venue inside the Orlando Museum of Art (2416 N Mills Ave, Orlando, FL 32803.) A woman in line had said that she thought Van Gogh would be sketching everyone in the audience. I let her know that would likely not be the case. No artist works that fast. He sat on the stage sketching as the audience filtered into the theater. I sat in the front row to sketch him, and he immediately started to sketch me. He really does look like Van Gogh with the thick red beard and furrowed brow. He invited members of the audience to join him on stage, saying, "people kept a distance from me my whole life."

He invited someone on stage to be sketches by him and the comedian Polly Esther, from Dammit Jim, I'm a comedian not a Doctor took the seat offered. He stood at the easel and sketched her. She pitched her show as she was being sketched but then he explained that silence while creating is alright. He started talking about his life as a minister in a coal mining town. When he saw the suffering around him, he gave up his possessions to live more like the people he was preaching to. His father intervened and told him to stop being so dramatic. Ultimately this was not to be his life's work.

His brother Theo suggested Van Gogh learn to paint. This he picked up with an equal passion. Theo helped support Van Gogh's painting obsession and ultimately he settled in the south of France. He had dreams of starting an artists colony and Gauguin took Theo's several hundred dollar stipend to join Van Gogh painting in the south of France. The two artists had totally different views on art and were soon fighting.

Van Gogh said that many of his best paintings were done in the insane asylum. Starry Night was projected on the screen. He found peace away from people. The towns people tormented him. He dispelled the notion that he cut his own ear off saying Gauguin cut him with a saber. He did admit to giving the ear fragment to a prostitute. He also dispelled the notion that he committed suicide. He claimed he was shot by a boy he approached in the fields where he painted. He didn't want the boy to be in trouble so he kept the incident to himself. After he died, a doctor took some of his best paintings. Theo died shortly after wards of a broken heart.

When the artist on stage announced his true name was Walter DeForest, the illusion was broken. Walter was born on the day Van Gogh died.  Surprisingly the original Star Trek doctors actual name is DeForest Kelly. I had  learned many alternate truths about one off my favorite artists. As an artist this was a fun show to watch and sketch. I give it 8 of 10 sunflowers.

My Pal Bette at Fringe


Tammy Kopko returns as Bette Davis, the chain-smoking, tough-talking, Hollywood DIVA and unlikely guardian angel and mentor to awkward 5 year-old Tommy Klein, (Rhyse Silvestro) in the this special anniversary production of the Fringe and NYC hit comedy by John Ryan.

Tommy, smothered by his needy mom, (Janine Klein) finds he needs more guidance as her grows up and he finds it in Bette Davis. Tammy's performance as Bette is spot on, her every nuance is inspired by the ballsy disdain of this Hollywood DIVA. She is truly a force to be reckoned with. Her mission is to earn her wings guiding the young Tommy towards adulthood. Demonic puppets act as the young boy's inner demons but they fall flat as guiding voices.

A date goes horribly wrong when an attention starved girl (Melanie Leon) throws herself at the young boy. Her performance is wide eyed, manic and over the top funny. As she freezes in mid kiss, Tommy gets up from the couch and turns to his diva for advice. She advises him to follow his inner voice and that doesn't lead him to want to pursue women.

The young Tommy grows into a teen, (Clark Levi) ready for college. He ends up rooming with a misogynistic dude as a roommate and Bette earns her wings when the sensitive Tommy stands up for himself. As she says, she gets her wings any time a frat boy screams.

Tammy Kopko as Bette Davis was fabulous. Every moment she was on stage was pure gold. This was a fun romp and the few moments that fall short are easily forgiven for just one more moment of the DIVA's attitude. Look no further for your next Fringe Crush.

13 Dead Dreams of "Eugene" at the Fringe


X-Files meets The Twilight Zone in the dark! Fringe veterans, Paul Strickland and Erika Kate MacDonald  team up in this creepy flashlight and shadow play with original songs. "13 Dead Dreams of Eugene" is based on the true story of a body that was found in Sabina on June 6, 1929. The unidentified dead man was 50 to 80 years old was found on the 3C highway near the Borum Road. The only identification that could be found on him was a slip of tablet paper with the address 1118 Yale Ave., Cincinnati written on it. The Cincinnati police checked the address and found it was a vacant lot. The closest man to this address was a man named Eugene Johnson and for this reason the unknown man was given the name of "Eugene." It became known as the Sabina Mummy. It was placed on display in hopes of identification. That’s when the Dead Dreams began. Experience the shared recurring nightmares that haunted one sleepy Ohio town, and the stranger-than-fiction story of “Eugene.” No one ever came to claim the body and it wasn't buried until 1964.

I made special arrangements with the performers to let them know I would sketch the show from the back row to avoid letting any member of the audience see that I was creating this sketch. Pam and I arrived winded because we had gone to the wrong venue and had to run across Lock Haven Park to try and get to Dead Dreams before the doors closed. A woman seated in front of us gave us a high five for our winded enthusiasm. Get sat down and the theater immediately went black.

A slow ghostly voice began talking about the experience of being dead. He recalled his wake, the people crying and learning about his family from fragments of conversations. The dead lack memories so they linger to find out what they can. Eugene was a black man who had been murdered. He was never identified, and his murderer was never found. His body was on display in the town of Sabina for decades, a macabre side show attraction. After the body went on display, people in the town began having recurring nightmares and these were written down for posterity. Town's people didn't like to recall those nightmares. Once written they were filed away to be archived and forgotten. Paul and Erika however kept asking about these memories and they were finally given access to the recorded nightmares found in a cardboard box. Those documents are the foundation around which they built the show.

Flashlights, rear projections and string silhouettes are used to recount the tales. Much of the time the room is pitch black with just the ghostly words to carry the tales. This show is Fringe at it's best. Solid story telling wrapped in mysterious light and original song. Definitely a "must see show" at this year's Fringe.

Corsets and Cuties - Harlots at Fringe


The opening number alone makes this show worth the price of admission.The entire cast danced on stage in lavish Victorian attire as if at a party for Marie Antoinette. I was upset that number was over so fast. I only had the time to catch the MC, Lady Jaimz. But the cast gyrated and dances suggestively and the Corsets and Cuties were in their true top form. This burlesque company combines humor with their routines in unique and unexpected ways. Barbie Rhinestone started her routine off with sock puppets, but this was no kids fringe show.

Nicki Jax has a Cat Woman like way of moving that is fun to attempt to draw. My favorite routine for the night was set to the song, This is Me, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Members of the cast wore t shirts that carried labels set by bullies. Nicki's shirt had the unlikely title of UGLY. NERD, CUNT, BITCH, the words had little meaning as they sang their anthem. I had never heard the song before and I was moved. Now I need to see the film, The Greatest Showman. All of these men and woman are great showmen. they were born to sing dance and entertain. Granted there was some lip syncing but there are also some very strong voices in the cast.

Harlots strip away the surface fashions and bear all with humor and heart.

Taurus Faeces at Fringe


in Taurus Faeces, Deanna Braunstein shared the gift of her mothers many stories in this solo show. These were tales of Life,  Love, truth and some crap. One daughter became a playwright and the other an actress proving that their mom passed along her love of theater and story telling. The title comes from the fact that mom didn't like her kids to ever curse. Instead she insisted that they learn to curse in Latin and Bull Sh*t translates into Taurus Faeces.

The Red venue was crowded to overflowing so I  used my art stool and sat on the sidelines. Press has shown up in droves indication that there is a high interest in this years Fringe Festival. Reviews, commentary and an excited buzz have begun.

The most visual story involved mom learning that a child will create with poop if given the chance. She entered a room with poop speared walls, floors and even ceiling. Apparently there is a trick in tying a diaper which makes access to the creative substance impossible. She had to clean her child multiple times to erase the memory. However she didn't learn her lesson because the incident was repeated. The compelling stories were related with emotional theatricality. Her mom's every nuance was brought to life.

Deanna ended the show saying that everyone has a story to tell, and if you ever plan to have children you should talk to your elder relatives and learn their stories. Those stories will want to be heard someday by the generations to come. Listen, live, love and share.

Along the Way at the Orlando Fringe Festival


Mertz Productions, of Orlando, FL presents Along the Way at this year's Orlando International Fringe Festival. The musical takes a glimpse into the lives of 8 people and how they are intertwined through travel. Each of them travel for different reasons, but along the way, all are faced with the question of what spurs them towards adventure and what those journeys mean to them. An original story featuring popular and contemporary pop music. Featuring lovable characters, comedy, romance and some powerful singing.

Set in an airport, the stage is set when a flight is delayed. Passengers must pass the time resulting in new friendships and some romance. The airport janitor breaks into a dream sequence in which everyone has a mop to dance with. The stewardess checking passengers in at the gate was Michelle Knight who performed as Snow White in Disenchanted, a Fringe show that made it all the way to off Broadway in the Big Apple. She brought the same saucy delivery to this role creating a character who could face down the most distraught crowd of passengers. A one point she broke into song, and cut the scene short apologizing, saying, "I forgot we cut that one."

A holistic healer fell for a business traveler, and serenades him with her Ukulele. A stewardess wife wants to get on the flight so she could be with her husband, the pilot, for their anniversary. Some numbers hit home with absolute delight and others were just stirred into the mix not yet forwarding the story or serving a purpose. There was some real singing talent in the cast. Overall however the show had me bobbing my head as I sketched, a pleasant way to spend 55 minutes at the Fringe.

F*ckboys: The Musical


F*ckboys: The Musical written by Savannah Pedersen is so far my favorite show that I have seen at Fringe this year. Presented by Infinite Productions, founded by Kayla Lopez and Savannah Pedersen, of Orlando, FL, this musical took me by surprise. The title had me thinking that I might be walking into a flashy cross dressing cabaret. Instead I got to meet some very real women with very real issues and concerns. These women meet at a local bar for karaoke night. One loves to sing and the others drink and commiserate. Their goal as stated in the opening number is to educate the audience about F*ckboys who are clearly a roadblock to any single girls peace of mind.

You know them. You love them. You love to hate them. Whatever the case may be, you've probably run into a F*ckboy at some point in your life. This is a haphazard guide to navigating the dating scene as told through the eyes of a bunch of twenty-somethings. A musical extravaganza you won't want to miss. In a musical number about the history of F*ckboys, Shakespeare is roasted. "Billy Shakes referred to women as strumpets. If I hear another high school freshman rave about how her relationship is JUST like Romeo and Juliet because she thinks that that is an accurate depiction of romance, I’m gonna go back in time and murder him myself. Also, he just looks like an asshole. Classic f*ckboy."

This show has just the right balance of real world difficulties mixed with humor. You learn to love and care about each character in turn as you learn about their strengths and weaknesses. Boys throw weak pick up lines at them like wet noodles. When one new man enters the bar everything freezes as the women size him up and come to the conclusion that he might not be a F*ckboy. Sure enough he talks one woman through her difficult break up without hitting on her when  she is down.

Woman 3, (Meghan Mitchell) was a corporate competitor whose career was skyrocketing. She can rock a Power Pantsuit like nobody's business. If she doesn't become the next Oprah by the time she's 30, she would consider herself a failure. She seemed to have it all in check but even she go sideswiped by romance.

The songs are well  written and the show moves at a lively pace. The fourth wall is broken to hilarious effect. Very serious life choices have to be made and in the end they band together singing that they are strong as long as they have each other. If you know a single 20 something, they need to see this show. Hell, I'm a 50 something and I loved every minute.

For Love Sir: Letters of Life, Love, and Sacrifice


Mikael A. Duffy of Bent Book Productions wrote For Love Sir: Letters of Life, Love, and Sacrifice and she invited me to a rehearsal at Dragonfly Studio and Productions, (133 W McKey St, Ocoee, FL 3476.) This Fringe Production was built around real letters home from service men and women.  "For Love, Sir" is a beautiful and poignant piece following the lives of three service members and their families as they experience the hardships and lifestyle of active duty. This story is inspired by real soldiers and their families over the course of American History.

Two young lovers have to separate as he goes off to service, a mother has to leave her daughter behind and a son leaves his loving mother. Their stories unfold as they write home. Ideals turn to the gritty reality of the senseless violence to the point where the son can no longer write the truth of his new reality. Though staged in modern day fatigues and uniforms, the language has the romantic flair that existed when people wrote letters rather than 140 character tweets. Only at the end of the play does it become clear that these letters were written during the civil war, World War I and Vietnam. It became clear that the overriding themes of love and loss never change with time. The sacrifices remain the same.

When the mother and daughter tearfully ran towards each other to be reunited, a chair got in their way and they couldn't decide which way to get around the obstacle to embrace. It was a funny but very real accident of staging that I hope remains in the final run through. Being an early rehearsal there were a few kinks yet to be worked out. But it was was very clear that this production has heart.

LUNA


Ana Cuellar, a Cirque du Soleil artist, brings  8 internationally acclaimed dances to Fringe this year through her creation of LUNA. The show’s emotional forces draw you in to experience her creative spirit channeled through the movement of dance. Featuring Cirque and top professional performers.

A young woman sat at a desk writing in her journal with a large feather pen. As he wrote, different performers came on stage performing dances that expressed the various sides of her personality. IF she took a step back so would the dancer. Performers expressed passion, yearning and some amazing acts of balance and dexterity. What the write imagined, came to life. One performer did amazing things with close to a dozen hula hoops.

On particularly strong piece featured spoken word that was about overcoming a lifetime of bullying. The performers realized their inner beauty despite the history of abuse. Megan Crawford, a local dancer sailed light as a feather in her muscular partners arms. The powerful spoken word and the graceful dancing was truly moving. Another couple danced a flamenco inspired dance with romantic flair. I give the show 8 out of 10 hula hoops.

Unloading Pulse Memorial Items at Off-Site


After clearing memorial items away from the Pulse Nightclub,we drove to the onePULSE Foundation storage facility. While all the staff and Barbara Poma went upstairs to the air conditioned storage facility, I remained behind with the truck in the entrance bay. Call me paranoid but I didn't want to leave the truck unattended. In Parkland, Florida where 17 students and faculty were killed in a mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there was a memorial set up outside the high school with thousands of flowers, banners, teddy bears, and pin wheels. A drunk and disorderly couple were seen by a witness taking items from the memorials of the Parkland shooting victims and putting them in their truck.

A witnesses said they saw 37-year-old Michael Shawn Kennedy and 40-year-old Kara O’Neil taking items from a fence outside the High School. When police arrived they found the items in the couple's car. A deputy also saw Kennedy placing a box of pinwheels in the vehicle. They claimed they were going to set up their own memorial. One deputy noted that Kennedy said, "I ripped down the anti-gun banner because I am pro-gun."

According to the incident report, these items from the memorial were found in their car: a Parkland athletics trophy, a shadowbox with photos of the 17 victims, 17 white metal angel pennants, dedication plaques that say "The Mighty Seventeen" and "MSD Parkland Strong", 3 white teddy bears, an anti-gun banner, 25 pinwheel lawn ornaments some with the victims' names, American flags, and a red stone that says "Never Again." It is hard to imagine what was going through their drunken heads.

After leaving the onePULSE Foundation facility, the Orange County Regional History Center staff went to the off site facility for their museum collection. After Hurricane Irma, that storage facility suffered damage when an air conditioning hatch blew off and gouged multiple holes in the warehouse roofing. Water soaked drop-ceiling insulation and tile panels, until they were so heavy that they crashed down exploding on the concrete floor like bombs.  All of the inside walls in the warehouse had to be replaced to keep the historic items from being over run with black mold. Dehumidifiers ran for weeks to suck moisture from the air. Pulse memorial items still on the floor were once again subjected to water, but a heroic effort was made to dry and restore everything and not a single item was lost.  The new Pulse memorial items were paced on palettes. With the two year exhibit opening on June 2, some of these memorial items might end up on display, which will be up much longer that the 7 days that the One Year Later exhibit was open last year. That exhibit had to come down to make way for a wedding reception. This year's exhibition will focus on the new stories the History Center has learned and on what has changed for Orlando since last year.

AquaDance Fundraiser


Genevieve Bernard of Voci Dance has always wanted to choreograph a water ballet. A week before the Orlando International Fringe Festival got underway, she held a fundraiser for her show titled AQUADance. The audience sat in lawn chairs on the back patio. Pam and I ended up sitting in a cactus garden in the corner of the pool enclosure. My hope was to sketch some of the audience as well as the dancers. Neighbors stopped by and brought along their lawn chairs because more people showed up that expected. A wind blew down the screen set up house left which acted as the dancers green room where they could dry of between sets. A Swam and large flamingo float acted as the background set.

AQUADance is the perfect Fringe show. It is sufficiently retro and weird while being absolutely adorable. Dancers came out wearing floral pink swimming caps while holding pink balls that they moved in undulating patterns. They all jumped in the pol gracefully and then began a Busby Berkely inspired number with kaleidoscopic patterns created as the dancers circled one and spun. When it came time to dis guard the balls they were thrown into the cactus garden where we sat.

Dancer Sarah Lockard was smiling ear to ear the whole time. Each dancer's unique characteristics came out at various times in the show. It was clear that despite the hard work they all were having a great time. Genevieve shed a tear because she was so happy to see her dream of a Fringe Water Ballet finally become a reality. The most funny routine came when all the dancers became flamingos by holding a hand over their heads that was moved like a flamingos head. The dancers moves in distinct and quirky bird like ways, strutting and moving like a regal flock. Their facial expressions, with wide eyes and pursed lips had me laughing out loud.

This production first water ballet in the history of the Orlando Fringe! Inspired by Esther Williams' classic aqua-musicals, Voci Dance presents a unique blend of modern dance and synchronized swimming. At an off-site venue with a pool and bar only 1 mile from the beer tent. The hand crafted bar has been in more shows than many actors. I had a coconut rum pineapple flavored tropical drink with an umbrella and I could have sipped that drink all night.

Brought to you by the award-winning company behind 2016's Paint Chips (Orlando Sentinel 'Best of the Fest,' Orlando Weekly 'Best of Orlando'). It will be staged at Al's home (The Aqua Venue 1314 Chichester Street Orlando, FL 32803) a few blocks north from the green lawn of faboulousness. Trust me this unique show will be worth the trek.

KNPR Radio Interview in Las Vegas


Pam Schwartz and I took a trip to Las Vegas where she was attending a National Council on Public History conference. This scheduling coincidence brought memorial experts to Las Vegas as their museums are continuing to collect and catalogued the items of remembrance that people left after the October 1, 2017 shooting that took 58 lives and had over 500 injured treated at area hospitals. With breakout segments like  “Documenting Resilience: Condolence Collection Projects in the Wake of Violence,” the national gathering of academics plans to discuss how communities such as Orlando, Newtown, Connecticut, and Isla Vista, California responded to mass casualty trauma.

KNPR Radio interviewed a panel of individuals who have had to collect in the wake of tragedy. Melissa Barthelemy is a graduate student at UC Santa Barbara who worked on efforts there. Pam Schwartz is chief curator of the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando, Florida and created and led the effort to manage the collection of items left at the scene of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre. Cynthia Sanford is the registrar at the Clark County Museum. She is heading up the effort to collect and catalog many of the items left at some of the memorials in Las Vegas.

I sketched as the three fielded questions. Producer Doug Puppel set the tone of the interview. Barthelemy said the collection, archiving and exhibition of items from pop-up memorials are a new area of history research. These kinds of memorials really only started to appear in the last few decades. She said people point to the many impromptu memorials left in the wake of Princess Diana's death as a contributor to the rise of spontaneous memorials. The fact that these mass memorials are visible on TV and social media contribute to the rise in items left in the wake of tragedy.

Schwartz said not every community is impacted the same way by a mass casualty event and therefore not every community reacts in the same way. Those differences change what is collected and how it is exhibited. “The biggest thing for people to understand, especially people who have not been through a similar sort of situation, is that one size doesn’t fit all,” she said. The focus of any exhibition should be on what will help the community with its healing process.

Sanford explained that her museum already has between 15,000 and 20,000 artifacts from the memorials. “Our role as a museum is to preserve the history of Southern Nevada,” she said, “Unfortunately, this event is now part of our history.” She said the museum is planning an exhibit for the one year anniversary of the shooting, but there is not a plan for a permanent home for the items. 5,000 items have been catalogued so far. 50 years from now, 100 years from now those items will be in storage. Every item you work on is someone's story. Sometimes when you get home, that is when it hits you. The three interviewees all explained that they are honored to be able to collect these events for their communities. You have to find a way to get through it.

Artegon is Long Gone


I did a series of sketches when plans were made to open Artegon Market Place on International Drive. I was fascinated by the idea of a thriving market similar to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul Turkey. What appeared in the first weeks were a series of cages filling the empty space of a former mall. Those cages were eventually replaced with mini themed store fronts but the place felt fractured and cut up. I had been toying with the idea of renting a space in the market to sell my art because they promised low cost rents for artists to start. RV, a local artist rented a large gallery but soon left because of broken promises by the management.

Being across from many of International Drives Premium Outlet malls where tourists spend plenty of money before heading back home, I thought there might be a ready market. For whatever reason, the market place never thrived. The center first opened in 2003 as Festival Bay Mall, but that only lasted until 2011. Artegon opened in 2014. The place seemed cursed. In the open inner court area a large Aerial Adventure Course was built with rope bridges, zip lines, suspended disks. The first week the course was opened, Robert Belvoir, 52, fell 30 feet to his death.

Lightstone Group ended its two-year experiment to take the "property in a new direction." Bass Pro Shop and Cinemark Theaters remain open since their buildings aren't owned by Lightstone. Artegon's owner recouped its $25 million investment, selling the properties for Bass Pro Shops and Cinemark Theaters for a combined $30 million. In the Noor Salman trial, footage was shown of Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen buying ammunition for the rifle used in the Pulse Nightclub attack along with some candy from Bass Pro Shops in the weeks before the massacre.

Blue Bamboo Fundraiser


I went to Cavanaugh's Wines for a Blue Bamboo Music Center for the Arts fundraiser back in 2016. Since that time, the venue has changed to Digress Wine (1215 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, Florida 32804.) The evening was a happy hour that featured Robotman plus Chris Cortez and Danny Jordan. Chris and Danny are featured in this sketch.

Blue Bamboo is part venue, part recording studio, and part art gallery, located at 1905 Kentucky Ave in Winter Park, Fl, just off Fairbanks between Formosa and Clay. This unique new space offers live performances most evenings, a state of the art recording studio, and gallery space.  More concert hall than night club, they are open to all ages and they present all kinds of music, theater, dance, and spoken word events.  The venue is also available for private parties.  You can browse the schedule for tickets or call  407-636-9951 for more information.

The Early Girl


Downstairs Lady Theatre presents The Early Girl written by Caroline Kava. Directed by Vicki Wicks, the play focuses on Lily, (Kelly Solberg), who plans to work at the brothel just a month in order to secure a solid financial foundation for her daughter, Dolly. She enters the brothel insecure and shy but with ambitions to make plenty of money. Jewel Box House Madam Lana (Dianna Bennett) believes in Lilly and encourages her, believing she will break records her first year in the house. Lana was once a working girl herself but now she runs her own establishment and she has only a few rules, no cell phones, only leave the house once a month for a "Doctor Day" and no violence.

This play doesn't sensationalize the sex industry, instead it delved into these women's hopes dreams and lost aspirations. The setting is the waiting area between Johns. The women pass the time reading and chatting. The brothel setting is surprisingly domestic, a quiet suburban living room. The rehearsal I attended was in a Winter Garden home adding to the surreal domesticity.

Pam Schwartz came along with me to chaperone. I felt like Toulouse Lautrec sketching brothel life. While I struggled with the sketch, I heard her laughing at the off hand exchanges between the women on stage. The play is both comic and tragic. Lilly is mentored and advised by the more established girls. Jean (Carol Jacqueline Palumbo) who is a smart woman who once thought she was only going to earn some extra money and get out, but now she feels close to hitting rock bottom and Pat (Kat Kemmet) who uses her earnings to buy frivolous personal items, Laurel (April Tubbs) is hardened and keeps to herself reading but she sends the money back to her child in Spokane. George (Dina Najjar) has a regular customer named Eric who she feels may one day ask her to marry him. Each woman has their personal reasons for what they do and each has a heart of gold.

The Early Girls ambitions get out of hand when she takes Eric, George's regular to bed and kisses him which is in itself an infraction. George goes ballistic and a no hold barred cat fight ensues. Of course violence is against the house rules, and the girls have to stick together to keep from being broken apart. Though there are differences, they care about each other. As an outsider looking in, we get to care about each woman in turn as well. Though in an industry that might seem dis-empowering, these women are empowered.

Time Trials at Daytona International Speedway


Wendy Wallenberg gave me a tip about sketching time trials at Daytona International Speedway. it is a long scenic drive to the speedway down the Beach Line Expressway. Wendy met me at the entrance and guided me to the bleachers being used to watch the race. This wasn't a crowded day at the track. The few people in the bleachers were mostly friends and family of the drivers. Car 0158A crashed before I got to the track. The driver was female and she was unhurt but clearly the car is going to need lots of love and care. Track side, I sat in the top row of the bleachers to  get a view over the fencing. cars would scream by so fast that they were just blurs. Being an  off day at the track, it was possible to park anywhere to see the race from any angle. I contented myself with these bleachers.

I never know who is in the lead of who is trailing. I suppose with time you can learn to follow the leaders. From my perspective it was a constant loud assault on the senses. The same effect might be achieved with a large crowd of competitors running with leaf blowers.

After the race, there was a small gathering with food and drink near the starting line. It offered a chance to mix and mingle with the racers.

Mother's Day at the Mennello Museum of American Art


I  went to the the Mennello Museum of American Art, (900 East Princeton Street, Orlando, FL 32803) to sketch the Free Family Day on the Second Sunday of the month. This just happened to line up with  Mother's Day. At the front desk, there was a free rose for every mother who came to the museum on that day. On display in the entry gallery were fairly large twisted metal sculptures along with the preparatory drawings on the walls. I decided to sit on a bench and sketch the sextant who greeted guests and handed out roses to the moms. Quite a few museum guests brought their mom along for  a day at the museum.

On exhibit in the museum now is, "When the Water Rises: Recent Paintings by Julie Heffernan", who uses the power of paint’s materiality and immediacy in the Mennello Museum’s exhibition. She brings form to the reality of our environmental and sociopolitical problems. This exhibition debuts nine new works by the artist.

Heffernan’s work explores the imagery of the mind’s eye to create complex environments. Her recent paintings create alternative habitats in response to the environmental disaster and planetary excess. With rising waters, she imagines worlds in trees or on rafts in which undulating mattresses, tree boughs, and road signs guide the journey. Construction cones interrupt the landscape signaling places to stop, enter tiny interior worlds, and reflect on the human condition—its hopeless activity, violence, failure, and redemption. Heffernan tends these alternative environments to safeguard bounties we cannot live without. In other moments, she names and points fingers to those people and activities implicated in recent calamities of both the physical and socio-political environment. Intricately wrought, Heffernan’s paintings evoke the fantastical allegory of Hieronymus Bosch and the sublime of Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt.

Also on exhibit in the Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden outside are two large sculptures, "Waltzing Matilda" and "Twin Vortexes" by American sculptor Alice Aycock. The Mennello Museum inaugurated the Grounds for Exhibitions with these beautiful works which were originally part of series of seven sculptures in Aycock’s significant outdoor exhibition on Park Avenue in Manhattan entitled Park Avenue Paper Chase. Grounds for Exhibition features year-long large-scale sculpture exhibitions by nationally renowned American artists who otherwise would not be shared with Orlando audiences. The sculptures will be on display through September 2018.

Blue Box 12


I established the Blue Box Initiative, so I could sketch talented performers in each of the 27 blue boxes which are painted on the sidewalks downtown Orlando. These boxes are for panhandlers and buskers. Busking was possible only during day light hours, but a recent amendment allows the boxes to be used at night. Although set up for panhandlers, police often insist street performers must use the blue boxes. Performing outside the boxes can result in 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Sasha Kendrick volunteered to perform in Blue Box 12 which is right across from the Lake Eola Band Shell. To me, performing on the Band Shell stage would make the most sense, but that is not allowed. Las Vegas has black circles painted on the pavement of Freemont Street which is also used to keep performers contained. The difference about Las Vegas is that every black circle has performers because there are so many tourists walking the streets that it is worth it for the performers to work just about every night. In Orlando the tourists keep to the theme parks never walking the streets of downtown and there is little effort to attract tourists downtown.

Blue Box 12 was in the blazing sun with no chance of shade. The light sidewalk cement acted like a mirrored reflector. Luckily I had thought to bring some sun screen. Sasha played her violin heroically for the hour or so that I sketched. I had established some of the background scene before she arrived. She pointed out that the extreme heat could cause the wood of her violin to warp. The bridge, which hold the strings away from the body of the violin in particular could warp and then literally spring free of the instrument.

I kept my sketch brief, and then we walked across the street where she continued to  play on a Lake Eola bench in the shade. She played in Lake Eola often and the police are happy to allow her to play. Someone bought us both a soda while she played and I did a second sketch. This was the first and only time that I have been given a tip for sketching on location. Were I to put out a tip jar anytime I  sketched, I would be considered a pan handler who was breaking the law and could face 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. The week of the Winter Park Paint out, a similar ordinance is in place, but the Paint out organizers got a permit which allowed for the creation of art on Park Avenue for the five days of the event.

Earth Fest Casselberry Florida


The performers stood on a truck bed stage under two large red umbrellas. There was no shade on the lawn in front of them and a few people watched from the shade of trees on the outskirts of the lawn. IT was boiling hot.

9th Annual EarthFest, Central Florida’s second largest environmentally friendly festival will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 10 AM to 3 PM at Lake Concord Park in Casselberry Sponsored by the City of Casselberry, Casselberry Friends of the Park and Keep Seminole Beautiful, EarthFest 2018 brings awareness about protecting our environment, creating clean energy and reducing our carbon footprint. The goal is to educate, encourage and empower citizens to create a sustainable environment by participating at the many fun activities located at the Green Vendor Area, Green Transportation and Energy Area, Entertainment Area, Kids Zone, and other fun zones throughout the entire park.

 EarthFest 2018 highlights include a special performance by Beth McKee and The Swamp Sistas, the Arbor Day Free Tree Giveaway, free plant giveaways, butterfly releases, eco-fun activities and live entertainment. Throughout the day, numerous workshops and educational presentations will be held both indoors and at the individual environmental vendor booths.   The Art House features the Recycled Art Show with art that is totally created from re-purposed material.  The Commission Chambers will host the Drop Savers Award Program.

The Good Friday Lamentation


I went to the Saint George Orthodox Church (24 N Rosalind Ave, Orlando, FL 32801) to sketch a Lamentation of Christ service. I knew nothing about what to expect so it was like going to a play without knowing the plot. This church is right on Lake Eola and each week there is a food share in the parking lot behind the church which always brings a crowd. Institutions around the church get upset that they have to clean up the Styrofoam containers that litter the area after each feeding. I'm surprised the church hasn't considered a more ecological way of distributing food.

The Good Friday Lamentation service had a canopy set up at the front of the church which was covered in roses. A cantor in black robes walked through the space waving a golden orb that gave off a smoky incense. The service examines the grief of Mary, a mother watching her son die a torturous death, executed as a criminal, while knowing he was the Son of God.  The liturgical hymns of ancient centuries probe this scene in compelling, chanted dialogue between mother and son on Holy Friday.   The tone is mournful while attention is drawn to a representation of Christ’s tomb: the kouvloukion covered in flowers and holding the epitaphiosan image of the dead Christ. Incense permeates the senses. The mood is solemn as the hymns chanted by the cantors (or psaltis) contemplate the Creator who “became earthly to renew the earthly.” At this moment in the Eastern Orthodox Holy Friday ritual, the chanting is true lamentation. My primary concern was with the beauty of the service.

The Greek Orthodox Church has been serving the needs of the Orthodox community of Orlando for over 35 years, it has become an icon in Downtown. Services are held in Arabic, Greek, Slavonic and English. The Lamentation that I  sketched I believe was in Slavic. Towards the end of the service everyone got up and they walked outside the church and circled the building. That was when I decided my sketch was complete.
